My name is Katie Reekie and I am the Modern Apprentice for McLaren Community Sport Hub.
The main role of my job is to deliver coaching sessions in a wide range of sports including: swimming, hockey, volleyball, football, badminton, athletics, climbing and table tennis. As well as this I am organising the Trossachs Summer Festival which is a fundraiser event for the next modern apprentice.
In my role, I coach for the high school pupils running lunch time and after school classes as well as coaching primary school aged children in their chosen sports during evening classes at the leisure centre. I also coach with all the sport clubs such as the Trossachs Tigers hockey club, the Callander Raiders Cricket Club and very shortly, Loch Venacher Sailing Club.
As well as coaching all the local clubs, another part of my job is to start up new sport clubs. So far I have started junior and senior climbing club and shortly will be starting adult netball club and senior girls hockey.
At the end of my apprenticeship I hope to pass my SVQ3 Leisure Management course and taking on the responsibility of organising the summer festival is a large part in achieving this goal.
This position has been a fantastic opportunity and it has given me a taste of the working world, increased my confidence and communication skills and is a brilliant stepping stone towards future employment. I hope with the money raised at the Trossachs Summer Festival that someone else will be given the opportunity next year to do the same.
